Two art exhibits, one that showcases artworks added to the Daum’s permanent collection during the past two years and one that features pastel drawings by Sherry Leedy, will open June 23 at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus. Both exhibits will close Aug. 27. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

“New Now 3: Recent Additions to the Collection” includes 27 artworks by 19 artists, mostly American, and is comprised of paintings, prints, ceramics, fiber art, and photography. The works range in date from 1981 to 2016, with the majority made during the last decade. Among the artists represented are Alexis Rockman, Peter Pincus, Misty Gamble, Peter Voulkos, and Tom Huck. This exhibit will be in the Freed Gallery.

Some of the works are gifts from the estate of the late Dr. Harold F. Daum, the museum’s namesake. Artists and individuals interested in the success of the Daum’s programs gifted some pieces, and other selections were purchased with funds from an acquisitions endowment.

“Sherry Leedy: The Weight of Light” includes 20 pastel drawings by Leedy that focus on domestic still lifes of flowers and plants, glassware and crockery, and fabric and mirrors. Leedy is the owner-director of the Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art Gallery in Kansas City and a practicing artist.

This body of work, made during the last decade, highlights Leedy’s skilled handling of form, pattern, color, light, rhythm, and line. The drawings are filled with personal meaning for the artist but also tell a visual story about the beauty and depth of life that abounds in the everyday world.

An opening reception for the public will be at 6 p.m. June 22 and is part of the Daum’s Summer Nights at the Museum. Thomas Piché Jr., Daum Museum director, will give a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. The next evening event will be July 27 and features SpoFest, a community group that promotes the writing and sharing of poetry and prose in the Sedalia area.

The Daum’s summer exhibitions have received financial assistance from Katherine Menefee, season underwriter; Barbara Schrader, season underwriter; Mr. and Mrs. James O. Cooney, exhibition sponsors; Steve Ellebracht, exhibition sponsor; Sylvia Hopkins, exhibition sponsor; and Sylvia L. Thompson, exhibition sponsor.
