State Fair Community College (SFCC) will host a Black History Month event on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Stauffacher Theatre on the SFCC campus. The event will feature research presentations, panel discussions, and guest speakers exploring Black history, geographies, and the connections between place, identity, culture, and trauma in Central Missouri.  

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, learn from expert scholars, and celebrate the rich history and contributions of Black communities. This event is free and open to the public. 

The event will feature presentations from Dr. Jon Taylor, professor of history at the University of Central Missouri, presenting “Remembering the Neck: A President, a Church, & Trails West.” And Dr. Robbie Paul, professor of sociology at SFCC, presenting “Community Clearcutting & the Enigma of Truth: A Historical Case Study in Urban Renewal, Structural Violence & Cultural Trauma in Columbia, MO.” Guest speakers and representatives include Stan and Nik Byndom, Columbia Community Advocates, discussing cultural competency, social justice, historical recognition (African American Heritage Trail), and economic development.
