Two State Fair Community College vocal music students competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Kansas City Chapter competition Feb. 9 in Kansas City.
Freshmen Nathan Hedglin of Holden and Brian Oliphant of Cassville competed in the Lower Collegiate Men’s Division that included students from Kansas State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Central Missouri, and William Jewell College. Hedglin placed third in his division.
Students were required to prepare three selections, one in English, at least one in a foreign language and one art song or opera aria. A panel of music instructors evaluated the students and scored the performances using the NATS contest rubric.
Both Hedglin and Oliphant study voice with Ron Sayer, SFCC Music Arts program coordinator. This was the first college competition for both students. Marjorie Sipe, SFCC adjunct instructor, accompanied them.
