The State Fair Community College Music Arts program will conclude its season with the President’s Reception and Concert on May 2 in Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus. The public is invited to attend the free event; seating will be first come, first served.

A reception of light desserts will be held 6:15-6:45 p.m. in the Parkhurst Student Commons in the Stauffacher Center while the SFCC Jazz Ensemble performs. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the theatre and features performances by SFCC’s Contemporary and Chamber Choirs and the Concert Band.

SFCC Music Arts Program Coordinator and Instructor Dr. Christopher Kindle will direct the Contemporary and Chamber choirs. Gwen Kappelman will be the accompanist, and Russ Schupp will be the percussionist. The Contemporary Choir will perform “Magic to Do,” the opening song from the musical “Pippin,” and the Gershwin brothers’ “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Two songs arranged by Mac Huff, “Louder Than Words” and That’s When the Music Takes Me,” also will be performed. Huff began arranging songs while he was in high school, developed his choral composing skills at the University of Wisconsin, and later wrote and directed music for television shows and Disney.

The Chamber Choir’s performance will feature Elaine Hagenberg’s illuminating “Splendor” and her melodious, flowing composition “Measure Me. Sky!” Hagenberg, a native of Iowa and graduate of Drake University in music education, is an award-winning composer whose music has been performed throughout the world. The Chamber Choir’s portion also will include Bob Dylan’s powerful and emotionally charged song “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”

SFCC Instructor Joe Schreimann will direct the SFCC Concert Band. The performance will feature “American Riversongs” by music teacher and composer Pierre LaPlante, “Amazing Grace” by Frank Ticheli, professor of composition at University of Southern California whose orchestral works have been performed by world-renowned symphonies, and “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Phillip Sousa, known as the “March King,”

The Chamber Choir and Concert Band will join to conclude the President’s Concert with Grammy Award-winning orchestral and choral composer Christopher Tin’s inspiring “Sogno di Volare (The Dream of Flight).”
