State Fair Community College is proud to host the Missouri State Museum’s traveling exhibition, Boom! The Rise and Fall of Missouri’s Black Business District, now on display at the Donald C. Proctor Library, located inside the Yeater Learning Center on the Sedalia campus.
The exhibit is free and open to the public from now until Feb. 1, 2025, and highlights the history of five pivotal Black business districts in Missouri: The Foot in Jefferson City, The Wedge in Hannibal, Sharp End in Columbia, Vine Street in Kansas City, and the Ville in St. Louis.
Exploring a powerful chapter in Missouri’s history, the exhibition examines how these districts emerged as cornerstones of Black life, culture, and survival in the face of segregation and systemic racism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors will learn about the individuals and events that shaped the rise and eventual decline of these vibrant business communities.
