Good day, fellow SFCC peers!

Welcome to State Fair. Regardless of how far you are in your journey of higher education, there are a few things everyone should know. Among those few things are logging into “SFCCsecure” WIFI, mySFCC navigation, and Degree Works.

My name is Robert Johnson, and I am a sophomore here at SFCC where I have been working the past two semesters as one of Student Success and Retention’s Work-Study Students. I am a pre-engineering student here at SFCC, and I plan to transfer to Missouri Science and Technology in the fall of 2021 in pursuit of my bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering. Attending State Fair has been the single greatest decision I have made in my adult life as it has prepared me to be successful at the university level. I am originally from Shawnee, Kansas where I graduated early and immediately joined the work force. I always knew I would pursue higher education at a later time, but when I turned twenty, I knew I needed to act. I jumped at the opportunity to move to Knob Noster where my mother currently resides and works as an ABA therapist for children with special needs. I was always the kid who didn’t have to put in a single drop of effort into my coursework and still obtained a B or better. State Fair has taught me how to focus my attention on what is important and achieve that ‘A’ that I know I was always capable of. SFCC has also brought to me another great blessing, my girlfriend Alyssa, who is an exemplary student. She taught me many ways to stay organized, and I will try to share some of those tips over the course of the semester. This is a little piece of my long journey, which has led me to this wonderful school. I look forward to sharing with you some of the topics that I think are relevant to student success and community involvement.

When I first started classes in the summer of 2019, I worked with the IT department for about half an hour to figure out my login information. Since then, things have gotten easier, but one thing I was unaware of when fall classes started was logging into the appropriate WIFI with the appropriate credentials. I now know that the appropriate network name for SFCC students is SFCCsecure. The appropriate Username is the first part of your SFCC email address and the password is what you have set up through mySFCC. A note on mySFCC, the best thing I did for myself when I first started was to navigate through the portal and discover all that SFCC had to offer to its students. This allowed me to easily find my way around when being prompted to visit different sections of the portal by staff members. This made applying for scholarships and financial aid a breeze, as well as finding out how to access all of my up-to-date information so that I was staying on top of my education. Finally, the last thing I strongly suggest looking at is your Degree Works. Your navigator is a specialist at SFCC, and they know about transfer colleges, but students need to check with transfer colleges to ensure you take classes you need at your transfer college. Cross-referencing your Degree Works audit with program requirements at prospective four-year colleges will ensure a smooth transition when graduation comes along. Even if you are obtaining a degree or certificate from State Fair and then heading into the work force, it is still a good idea to make sure every class you are taking is going to get you one step closer to the future you came here for!
