Our program offers a great combination to get you into the job market: classroom instruction by teachers who have experience in the field, and occupational internships so you can apply your new training and skills.
Is This Program Right for Me?
Agronomists work to increase food production on fewer acres while protecting natural resources. Course work focuses on soil and plant sciences, soil erosion management and fertilization and chemical safety and application.
To succeed in this field you need excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills; written and verbal communication skills; the ability to comprehend, process and analyze data; deductive and inductive reasoning skills; and solid resource management skills.
Classes meet in the Potter-Ewing Agriculture Building, which includes greenhouses, a lab and classrooms. Adjacent land is used for test plots.
If you’d like to become involved in the community, the Ag Club is a great way to do it. The club also promotes leadership, educational advancement and group participation at the local, state and national levels. You also can participate in the Professional Agriculture Student Organization at state and national levels.
Occupational Outlook
An AAS degree in Agriculture with Emphasis in Agronomy provides the skills you need for jobs such as agronomy specialist, crop and seed production, fertilizer sales and application, pest and weed control, seed sales and analysis, crop scouting and soil scientist. Demand is steady for these jobs, and salaries range from $25,200 to $28,700.
