State Fair Community College’s The LearningForce spring schedule for professional and enrichment noncredit courses is now available at sfccmo.edu/the-learning-force. Early registration ensures classes will be held. The following classes are scheduled to start in January.
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A Truck Driving Academy is a four-week program designed to train new truck drivers how to drive, the rules and regulations of the road and how to keep driving logs. It includes about 40 hours of classroom time and 160 hours of driving time. Students must have a CDL permit and pass drug and health screenings before starting. Programs begin monthly; the next one begins Jan. 2 in Fielding Technical Center, Room 245. Upon completion, students will be prepared to earn a Class A CDL. - Yoga classes will meet from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Jan. 4 for eight sessions in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat or rug. Cost is $39; Irene Renauld is the instructor.
- Yogalates, a fusion of yoga and Pilates, will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight sessions beginning Jan. 4 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. This class offers stretching and strengthening of all major muscles and calms the mind and spirit. Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat. Cost is $39; Sue Guffin is the instructor.
- PIYO, a combination of Pilates, yoga and nonstop movement, will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Jan. 8 for eight sessions in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. This low-impact, music-driven, body-sculpting workout strengthens muscles, increases flexibility and improves balance and mobility. Cost is $39; Kim Windle is the instructor.
A 15 percent discount is applied if enrolling in three or more yoga, Yogalates or PIYO sessions at the same time prior to the start of class.
- Hobby Welding class will meet from 6-9 p.m. from Jan. 8-12 in Fielding Technical Center. This class offers hands-on, individual instruction that includes safety, set-up and basic welding applications. Students should be able to implement weld techniques for building, repair and artistic exploration. Class size is limited. Cost is $199; Carl Mounce is the instructor.
- Community Health Worker (CHW) is an online course conducted from Jan. 16 through May 11 for anyone interested in learning about the role of a CHW and for medical assistants, service coordinators and agency staff serving clients who need access to health care. Topics covered include how to motivate clients and families to set and reach health goals; how to assess clients’ eligibility for services; and how to assist with completing applications and registration forms. Tuition is free and funded by the Community Health Worker grant from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. However, a $75 book rental fee is required but can be refunded when course is completed if the book is in good condition. Lisa Montgomery, BSN, RN, Health Occupations instructor for the State Fair Career and Technology Center, is the instructor. To enroll, participants must be over 18 years old.
- For Women: Making an Impact in Your Workplace will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 17 in Thompson Conference Center. This one-day course teaches women how to be assertive, communicate, dress for the workplace, and develop leadership skills that increase positive influence and impact in the work environment. Lunch is included; cost is $149. Alia Stowers is the instructor.
- Beginning Country Line Dance will meet from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays for seven weeks beginning Jan. 18 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. This course is for people who like to dance but may not have a partner. Students will learn popular and current line dances. Cost is $59; instructor is Mary Donnell-Brown.
- Advanced Beekeeping will meet from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays for six weeks beginning Jan. 18 in the Potter-Ewing Agriculture Building, Room 400. The course follows the introductory course on basic beekeeping principles and will help participants become hobbyist beekeepers. Topics include how to obtain bees, set up and manage several beehives and a bee yard session. Cost is $79; Bruce R. Bird is the instructor.
- Beginning Country and Western Dance will meet from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays for seven weeks beginning Jan. 23 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. Beginners and people who want to refresh their skills will learn basic steps and simple variations of some of the most popular country and western dances. Students may attend alone or with a partner. Smooth-soled shoes are recommended. Cost is $49; Mary Donnell-Brown and Travis Goosen are instructors.
- DIY Wool Dryer Balls is a new class that will meet from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 31 in Fielding Center, Room 245. People who want to avoid chemicals and fragrances found in dryer sheets will learn how easy and economical it is to make their own wool dryer balls without additives. Participants will receive a felting needle, clean raw ball and roving to make two dryer balls. Additional materials may be purchased at the class. Cost is $39. DeAnna Amos is the instructor.
On tap for February will be Crappie University from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 13, 21 and 28 in Thompson Conference Center in Heckart Science and Allied Health Center. Top pros and guides presenting include Barry Morrow, Kevin Rogers, Todd Huckabee, and Terry Blankenship. Cost is $89.
