The State Fair Community College and Central Methodist University Student Missouri State Teacher Association (SMSTA) received the 2017 SMSTA Outstanding Service Project of the Year award and an Amazon gift card at the 2017 MSTA convention. The group was recognized for its Literacy Fair that has been held for the last two years on the Sedalia campus.
Children ages 3-5 who attend preschool or go to a child care facility in Pettis County and their families were invited to come for a light meal, participate in craft stations and visit with personnel from the Sedalia Police and Fire Departments, Pettis County Fire Protection District No. 1, Pettis County Ambulance District, and the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office. More than 150 children and adults attended this year’s fair that was held May 4.
Each child received a goody bag and a free book. Education students and Scholastic Books donated the books, and other organizations contributed items for the bags and food.
“Our students hosted this event to encourage children to read, strengthen their reading skills, have fun, and encourage families to spend quality time together reading,” said Cara Barth-Fagan, SFCC’s Elementary Education program coordinator and instructor. “It is an honor for them to be recognized for their community outreach.”
