State Fair Community College’s Student Life department will host suicide survivor and activist Kevin Hines at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the Thompson Conference Center in Heckart Science and Allied Health Center on the Sedalia campus. The public is invited to attend the free event.
In September 2000, Hines jumped off the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to end his life much like 2,000 others have done since the bridge was built in 1937. Miraculously, he survived and now shares his story as a “bridge of hope between life and death for people caught in the pain of living with serious mental illness, difficult life circumstances, and more.”
He shares his story with audiences in high schools, colleges and universities, corporations, military and law enforcement organizations, and more around the world. His message is, “Life is a gift, that is why they call it the present. Cherish it always.”
His story was featured in the 2006 film “The Bridge,” by Eric Steel, and in 2013, his book “Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving after a Suicide Attempt” was published.
Hines advocates for mental health wellness by serving on several foundation boards and on the Survivors Committee of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. He has spoken at congressional hearings in support of the Mental Health Parity Bill and works as an Ambassador to the National Council for Behavioral Health.
